The Raleigh native and March Madness folk hero led the Wolfpack to a bruising, hard-fought 76-64 victory against the Duke Blue Devils tonight, scoring 29 points in a massive upset.
The No. 11 seed team’s next stop is the Final Four, their first time qualifying since 1983.
For the 6-foot-9-inch, 275-lb power forward, this season has been nothing short of showstopping.
But his stature isn’t the only big thing about Burns.
What filled the court even more tonight was his smile, which he flashed encouragingly at adoring onlookers several times throughout the night, even when Jared McCain managed a few free throws and things were looking grim.
Burns’ megawatt grin sparks more joy than anything Marie Kondo has ever done. Its brilliance lies not only in its sheer magnitude but in the multiplicity of meanings it can contain.
There’s the knowing Burns smirk, which he deployed when Kyle Filipowski couldn’t stop himself from fouling out.
Then there’s the classic beam, which, when on full display, makes one wonder why they don’t just hand him the NCAA MVP trophy right here, right now.
In fact, Burns’ smile was so distracting that, in a post-game interview tonight, even Coach Jon Scheyer admitted that Burns made him feel like “a fuzzy little teddy bear inside.”
If he keeps mastering and refining this smile, maybe it won’t be long before Burns gets his own Skims endorsement. And maybe a Netflix special.
